Duke Energy Moves to Defend Permit for New Coal Plant. By Mitch Weiss, Forbes.com, April 3, 2008. "[Charlotte, N.C.-based] Duke Energy said Wednesday it will help state regulators defend an air quality permit that [would allow] the utility to build [its Cliffside 800-megawatt coal-fired power plant, and filed] a motion... to intervene in the case. Several environmental groups [including the Southern Environmental Law Center, Sierra Club and the National Parks Conservation Association] that appealed the... [air quality] permit have asked a judge to halt the $2.4 billion project, saying the permit violated federal law... 'We are vigorously going to assist the state,' Duke spokeswoman Marilyn Lineberger said. 'When completed, this modernization will mean that the Cliffside electric generation facility -- which is a critical asset for serving the growing electricity demands of Duke's customers -- will produce substantially more electricity than it does today at better efficiency'... the filing said... Eight protesters, [part of a network called Rising Tide,] were arrested Tuesday... Some... were stunned with Tasers... All were charged with trespassing, and four also were charged with resisting arrest."
