Federal Judge Blocks Uranium Mining Near Grand Canyon. AP, April 6, 2008. "[Late on Friday, after a hearing, U.S. District Judge Mary Murguia in Phoenix] blocked [VANE Minerals Group,] a British mining company from [drilling for uranium at up to 39 locations on seven sites on the Kaibab National Forest] near the Grand Canyon, agreeing with [the Sierra Club, Grand Canyon Trust and the Center for Biological Diversity] which sued the U.S. Forest Service for approving the plan [using a so-called categorical exclusion, which requires only minimal environmental review]. The company is seeking commercial quantities of uranium, which has soared in price in recent years and resulted in a wave of new development... The Forest Service approved the drilling in December."
