High Rice Prices Lead to Starving in Haiti. By David Luhnow and Joel Millman, WSJ, April 14, 2008, subscription. "A week of riots sparked by rising prices for staples such as rice and beans led to the ouster Saturday of PM Jacques Edouard Alexis... Whoever replaces Mr. Alexis will face an enormous problem. Global food prices are rising across the board, hitting the poorest countries hardest [and] Haiti is especially vulnerable... Shortly after the ouster of Mr. Alexis, President René Préval announced a 15% reduction in the price of rice... 'It won't be enough,' said Gerard Jean-Juste, a Catholic priest and activist in Port-au-Prince... 'People are near starving in different parts of the country. There are children who are skin and bones.'"
