New CAFE Standards to Save Billions in Gas. By David Shepardson, Detroit News, April 23, 2008. "Federal regulators said a dramatic proposal unveiled Tuesday to boost the fuel efficiency of the nation's cars and trucks to 31.6 miles per gallon by 2015 will save 55 billion gallons of fuel -- or $100 billion at the pump -- and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 521 million metric tons over the life of the new vehicles. Automakers grumbled about the proposal privately, but declined to publicly criticize it in the face of record-high oil prices -- and $3.51 a gallon gasoline. Instead, they planned to file comments urging changes that could soften the impact before the administration finalizes its regulation by Jan. 20. 'This tough nationwide proposed fuel economy increase will be good for both consumers and energy security,' said Dave McCurdy, president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the trade group representing Detroit's Big Three, Toyota Motor Corp., Daimler AG and five other automakers."
