Arizona Utility Agrees to Spend $400 Million to Upgrade a Coal-Fired Plant. By Ginger D. Richardson and Ryan Randazzo, Phoenix Arizona Republic, August 13, 2008. "[Arizona utility] Salt River Project will spend more than $400 million on new pollution-control equipment at [its 773-megawatt Coronado] coal-fired power [station by June 2014] as part of a settlement with the [EPA] involving suspected violations of the Clean Air Act. [SRP]… must also pay a [$950,000] fine and spend an additional $4 million on environmental-improvement projects [due to be completed by 2011] within the state, [including at least $1.25 million retrofitting Phoenix-area public school-bus diesel engines; at least $2 million installing solar panels at Arizona schools; and at least $750,000 replacing pre-1988 wood stoves with EPA-certified wood stoves or other, more energy-efficient appliances]… [EPA]… alleges that SRP 'illegally modified' its Coronado [plant] from 1996 to 2000… [which] the agency says… allowed the plant to burn more coal… The SRP settlement was the latest obtained by the U.S. as part of its 'Coal-Fired Power Plant Enforcement Initiative.'"
