McCain Picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for VP Running Mate. Grist, August 29, 2008. "John McCain has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) as his running mate for the presidential election. From 2003 to 2004, Palin was the ethics commissioner of the Alaska Gas and Oil Conservation Commission and has a reputation for strong integrity and fighting corruption. Palin has pushed to build a natural-gas pipeline from Alaska's North Slope and for opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, and recently sued the Interior Department over its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species. Palin also recently proposed eliminating Alaska's gas tax and got the state legislature to pass a bill to provide each Alaskan $1,200 to help with energy bills."
