Lobbyist for Oil and Gas Outdo Themselves. By Lindsay Renick Mayer, Capital Eye, July 29, 2009. "Oil and gas companies have significantly increased their spending to send their lobbying foot soldiers into the battle over the cap-and-trade energy bill. Between April and June, these companies spent $37.7 million, which represents a 30% increase from what they spent during the same time last year, the Center for Responsive Politics has found. Only five other industries saw a larger increase. These politicking efforts were likely directed at the comprehensive energy bill that the House passed in June. That measure includes a cap-and-trade provision and more stringent limits on greenhouse gas emissions. Oil and gas companies, electric utilities, coal mining companies and others have said the legislation could hurt their bottom line and force jobs overseas."
