Lawrence B. Slobodkin, Pioneering Ecologist, Dies at 81. Obituary by Carol Kaesuk Yoon, NYTimes, September 22, 2009. "Lawrence B. Slobodkin, a central figure in the development of ecology as a modern science and a co-author of one of its most inspiring inquiries, a paper known informally as 'The World Is Green,' died on Friday at his home in Old Field, N.Y. He was 81... In a paper published this year in the journal Evolutionary Ecology Research, Dr. Slobodkin reflected on what drove a lifetime's work: 'Sometimes I chose research problems for their presumed importance, but often I was attracted by their beauty. My research and that of most of my friends is not a story of triumph but rather of fascination by nature.'" His 2003 Citizen's Guide to Ecology, "presents a clear and current understanding of the ecological world, and how individual citizens can participate in practical decisions on ecological issues. It tackles such issues as global warming, ecology and health, organic farming, species extinction and adaptation, and endangered species."
