E.U. Ministers Agree on Pollution Fee for Truckers. By Pete Harrison, Reuters, 10/15/10. “Europe's Alpine nations can press ahead with charging trucks for the damage they do to infrastructure, air quality and human health, European Union ministers agreed on Friday [10/15/10]… Mountainous countries such as Austria with many people living in narrow valleys want haulers to pay for the damage trucks do as they rumble through, but were opposed by outlying EU states like Spain that rely heavily on road freight… Currently, European countries can charge tolls related to the cost of the infrastructure at around 15-25 cents per km. But if the rules clear their final hurdle -- approval by the European Parliament -- states will be able to charge an extra 3-4 cents to reflect the cost to public health caused by air and noise pollution.”
