Buffett and Gates Show up for Oil Sands Visit. By Norval Scott, Toronto G&M, August 20, 2008. "Warren Buffett of the mammoth holdings company Berkshire Hathaway, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Monday… asked [the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)] to give [them] a general overview of the oil sands and Canada's position in the energy world. Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Canada's second-largest oil and gas firm, was host of part of the tour at its $9.3-billion Horizon oil sands project, which is currently under development… Yesterday, a new campaign against the oil sands was launched [in the U.S.], as protesters in Denver picketed a gasoline station supplied by Suncor Energy Inc.'s Commerce City Refinery, which processes some crude from Alberta." 'Wow, This Is So Not Neat!'. Grist, August 20, 2008. "Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who are said to have a combined worth of $120 billion, 'were exercising curiosity, basically saying, Wow, this is neat,' says Greg Stringham of [CAPP]. Buffett has recently said he is interested in investing in oil sands; he invests in American oil company ConocoPhillips, which owns significant oil sands assets. [However,] if the bigwigs are interested in… alternatives to conventional oil, we could suggest better… sources than theenvironment-polluting, cancer-causing, duck-killingmonstrosity that is the oil sands."
