Disappearance of Plants that Thoreau Documented at Walden Pond Indicates Significant Climate Change. By Billy Baker, BGlobe, October 28, 2008. "Scientists from Boston University and Harvard reported that 27 percent of the species documented by Thoreau have disappeared, and another 36 percent are in such low numbers that their disappearance is imminent. These findings occur even though most of Concord's natural areas have been protected or undeveloped since Thoreau's time. During that same period, Concord's mean annual temperature climbed by 4 degrees, the researchers said."
