Report Says Climate Change Begs for Nuclear Energy. By James Kanter, NYTimes, October 15, 2008. "A report issued on Thursday describes nuclear power as one of the greenest fuels we have for an ever more populous world. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, an organization in Paris advising member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on nuclear power, reiterated the conclusions of United Nations scientists who have warned that carbon dioxide emissions must be cut in half by mid-century to keep climate change at a tolerable level. The agency also pointed out that electricity generation accounts for 27 percent of CO2 emissions created by human beings and is the largest and fastest growing source of greenhouse gases... Skeptics of nuclear power say expanding the technology would be an inefficient use of taxpayers' money. They argue that funds would be better spent on developing renewable sources of energy like solar, wind and biofuels -- and increasing energy efficiency." McCain Make an Urgent Appeal, During Presidential Debate, for Ramping Up Nuclear Power. By Kate Galbraith, NYTimes, October 16, 2008. "Both candidates hammered away at their talking points on energy independence. Senator John McCain prioritizes nuclear power. 'We can eliminate our dependence on foreign oil by building 45 new nuclear plants, power plants, right away. We can store and we can reprocess,' he said."
