Hybrid Buses Gain Foothold. By Michael Valkys, Poughkeepsie Journal (NY), November 13, 2008. "Passengers who use the City of Poughkeepsie transit system will soon be traveling in four new environmentally-friendly hybrid buses... Officials said the bus system provides about 387,000 passenger rides per year. The hybrid buses cost about $500,000 apiece, compared to about $275,000 for a diesel vehicle... Along with the environmental and cost-saving benefits, a ride on one of the hybrid buses Wednesday revealed they are also much quieter than the diesel buses the city has used for years... The buses include bike racks... The city's share of the more than $2 million purchase [from Gillig, a California-based company] was about $240,000. The difference was funded through money from the state Department of Transportation, the state Clean Fuel Vehicle Initiativeprogram and the Federal Transit Administration."
