Voters Will Decide Fate of Major Wind Project in Michigan Township. By Jeff Alexander, Muskegon Chronicle, October 31, 2008. "The popularity of alternative energy will be tested Tuesday in West Michigan when voters in Oceana County's Elbridge Township decide whether to permit construction of a $120 million commercial wind farm. John Deere Wind Energy and Michigan Wind LLC of Big Rapids want to erect 30 wind turbines on 5,000 acres of land spread across Elbridge Township, just east of Hart. The township board in August approved a zoning ordinance change that allowed the project to proceed. But township resident Don Wierenga launched a successful petition drive to put a referendum on the issue before all township voters. Wierenga said he sought the referendum so the township board wouldn't have the final say on the project... Wierenga, who also is running for township supervisor but hasn't taken a stance on the proposed wind farm, said he believes township voters will approve the project. 'I've told my neighbors it won't offend me to have wind turbines near my house,' he said."
