Canadian Provincial Contracts Boosting Wind Power. By Richard Blackwell, TorontoGlobe/Mail, January 24, 2009. "Canada's wind power business -- struggling to grapple with tight credit markets -- got a substantial boost from the Ontario government on Friday with the signing of contracts for six major wind farms in the province. The deals, which will boost Ontario's wind power capacity by almost 500 megawatts, are the latest in a wave of provincial contracts across the country lighting a fire under the industry... Last May, the Quebec government began the latest round of big contracts when it approved 15 bids for $5.5-billion in projects that will provide more than 2,000 MW in wind power to the province by 2015. In November, Manitoba Hydro signed a 25-year deal to buy power from a new 300-MW project, which will be the largest wind farm in Canada... Next up will be British Columbia, which in the spring is expected to approve as much as 1,000 MW worth of clean power contracts, several of which are likely to be awarded to wind farm projects. These long-term provincial contracts are crucial to an industry that -- like so many others -- is having trouble raising financing."
