Bernie Sanders to Chair Senate Subcommittee on Green Jobs. By Erin Kelly, Burlington Free Press, February 11, 2009. "Sen. Bernie Sanders will be named chairman of a new Senate subcommittee this week that aims to create green jobs that put Americans to work making the country more energy efficient while reducing global warming... The Subcommittee on Green Jobs will be part of the larger Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where Sanders has served since becoming a senator two years ago. He also serves on the energy committee and has become the Senate's point man on green jobs, which are a cornerstone of President Barack Obama's economic recovery and environmental agendas... [The stimulus bill] includes a Sanders program that would provide $3 billion to $4 billion in energy block grants that states and towns could use to increase the energy efficiency of homes, offices and government buildings. Sanders said the potential for creating green jobs goes far beyond the immediate economic stimulus bill. 'We're going to use this subcommittee to do everything we can to create millions of good-paying jobs in the United States as we move forward to a new energy system based on efficiency and sustainable energy,' Sanders said Tuesday."
