Next Up: A Renewable Portfolio Standard? By Kate Galbraith, NYTimes, February 20, 2009. "Advocates of renewable energy got the stimulus package of their dreams, packed with tax credits and grants and loan programs intended to restart their industry. Now they are turning their attention to the next item on their wish list: a national renewable portfolio standard. President Obama has called for 10 percent of the nation's electricity to come from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025... Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico, along with his cousin Senator Mark Udall of Colorado and Senator Amy J. Klobuchar of Minnesota, recently introduced a bill that would mandate 25 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2025... And if Congress passes a new renewable portfolio standard, the suddenly busy renewables and efficiency lobbyists will be back at work with the next task: seeking a carbon cap and trade system, or even a carbon tax."
