Wyoming Senate Candidates Spar over Science of Climate Change. By Mead Gruver, AP, October 38, 2008. "Sen. John Barrasso says the jury's still out on the existence of any climate change crisis, while Democratic opponent Nick Carter says the time to act is now... Carter said he was surprised that Barrasso, as an orthopedic surgeon and 'a man of science' would take an 'extreme, fringe position' on climate change. 'I am not someone who is a wild-eyed liberal on this idea, but the science is the science,' said Carter, an attorney from Gillette. 'The scientists agree on this and we need to take the proper actions right now to take care of global warming'... Yet the candidates agreed on coal's future. Both said they support figuring out how to burn coal more cleanly and without releasing carbon dioxide into the air... Wyoming produces more coal than any other state... The candidate elected next Tuesday will serve the four years left in the term of Sen. Craig Thomas, R-Wyo. Thomas died of leukemia months after winning the 2006 election with 70 percent of the vote. Democratic Gov. Dave Freudenthal appointed Barrasso, then a Republican state senator from Casper... to fill Thomas' spot."
