Dion Defends Green Shift Plan. Toronto Star, September 21, 2008. "Standing on a street corner in the bilingual community of Alexandria, Ont., Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion gave a spirited defense of his Green Shift plan, urging Canadians not to listen to Conservative 'propaganda' that it is simply a tax hike. The Green Shift, which promises a carbon tax offset by income tax cuts, is a key part of the Liberal platform, a full version of which is expected as early as tomorrow. 'Many of them (Canadians) think that the propaganda of the Conservatives is right, and that their taxes will go up because of the Liberals. No! It will be good for your wallet and good for the planet,' Dion said in the community east of Ottawa. Many Canadians complain they don't understand the Green Shift policy and fear it will add to the already skyrocketing cost of fuel. Dion said the idea is simple: 'cut income taxes, shift to pollution.' Dion said the party's platform will focus on meshing the economy and the environment and include a commitment from the Liberals to have balanced budgets."
